Horror hit Backrooms will be releasing a special extended cut of the film, with 15 minutes extra footage titled Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition.
The film is directed by Kane Parsons, a 20-year-old who rose to prominence making short films on YouTube. Based on the internet “creepypasta” stories as well as Parsons’ own web series, it stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a furniture store owner who, along with his therapist (Renate Reinsve), discovers a dimension of seemingly endless liminal spaces accessed through the store’s basement.
The movie has taken Hollywood by storm, making $331million (£249million) from a $10million (£7.5million) budget. The movie’s success led to rumours that Parsons had not in fact directed his own movie, a claim which was debunked by one of the film’s cast members, Mark Duplass. Having had continued good fortune at the box office ever since irs release in late May, a new version is now being released.
Variety first reported that the US cinema company AMC was listing the screenings, which are set for the July 4 weekend in America, as having a “theatrically exclusive post-credit” and addition footage, bringing the movie’s running time to two hours and six minutes. The re-release will also be happening in the UK at the same time, with listings available at Showcase Cinemas among others.
Based on what Kane said on Discord, this extended version seems to be a new episode of his Backrooms YouTube series shown after the credits of the film- VERY exciting! pic.twitter.com/xVQqOP3mVW

Director Parsons addressed the release on Discord, responding to fans’ scepticism. “It is not bts (behind the scenes) content… Nor is it a re-edit of the film” he said, instead teasing: “I think those who were hoping for more YT (YouTube) episodes will be into it”.
Recently, the filmmaker waded into the debate surrounding AI in cinema, criticising it as “cultural rot” that “defeats the purpose entirely” of creativity. Elsewhere, it was recently announced that the movie’s soundtrack would be getting a vinyl release.
