The event series is a spinoff of the Prime Video show "Secret Level"
A “Warhammer 40,000” animated event series is in development from Amazon MGM Studios, Blur Studios, and Games Workshop, Variety has learned exclusively.
In addition, Henry Cavill — who is attached to lead a live-action “Warhammer 40,000” series currently in development at Amazon — will executive produce the animated series as well. It is being developed alongside the live-action project.
The animated project will serve as a spinoff of the Amazon animated anthology series “Secret Level,” which featured a “Warhammer 40,000” episode when it debuted in late 2024. Blur Studios produced “Secret Level,” while Games Workshop is the manufacturer behind the tabletop miniature wargame.
Dave Wilson, who directed the “Warhammer 40,000” episode of “Secret Level” and served as the show’s supervising director, is the co-creator and director of the new animated series. He is developing it alongside John Orloff (“Masters of the Air,” “Band of Brothers”).
Exact plot details are under wraps, aside from the fact the series will feature The Deathwatch, an elite group of Space Marines that specialize in hunting down alien threats.
“Secret Level” creator Tim Miller will executive produce alongside Wilson for Blur Studios, with Cavill and Natalie Viscuso also executive producing. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment executive produces with Andy Smillie from Games Workshop. The series is being developed in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios and Games Workshop
“’Secret Level’ wasn’t conceived simply as an anthology. It was designed as a launchpad for larger stories,” said Wilson. “The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right. This series gives us the opportunity to build on that foundation and tell a much larger story. I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in ‘Warhammer 40,000’ for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”
This is the latest announcement of an Amazon project based on game IP. In addition to “Secret Level,” Prime Video currently airs the popular series adaptation of the “Fallout” video games, while the streamer is currently prepping a “Tomb Raider” live-action show starring Sophie Turner. Amazon is also currently at work on a live-action “God of War” show, though they are on the hunt for a new lead following an on-set injury to Kratos actor Ryan Hurst.
A series version of “Life Is Strange” recently began production, and adaptations of games like “Mass Effect” and “Wolfenstein” are currently in development.
