Producer Beau Flynn ("Moana") and creator Jazwares to partner on splashy family film
Your moviegoing experience is about to get a lot plusher. Squishmallows, the popular collectible toys known for softness and irreverent personalities, will come to life in a new feature film.
Variety can report that Amazon MGM is developing a tentpole family film around the brand, licensing rights and co-producing with creator Jazwares. The studio is partnering with uberproducer Beau Flynn (âMoana,â âHello Kittyâ), with Shelby Thomas overseeing for the FlynnPictureCo banner.
Amazon MGM went big for the deal, insiders say, and want to create global-facing, four-quadrant event with Flynn. Itâs presently unknown if the film will be animated, live-action or a hybrid. Creative attachments have yet to be revealed.
Squishmallows was launched in 2017 and has evolved into a billion-dollar venture across 60 countries. Stakeholders estimate that two of the toys are sold per second. The product range spans a universe of over 3,000 original character, from ambassador Cam the Cat to Bigfoots, Axolotls and an adorable sentient grilled cheese named Lil Gouda. The toys have cross-generational appeal, as well, hooking kids, teens, adults and the collector market. Over 600 million have been sold to date. The range is also leveraged for licensing in categories like apparel, health and beauty and home décor. The toys signed with CAA in 2021.
Flynn has a knack for broad IP, having delivered films like âMoanaâ and âJungle Cruiseâ at Disney. Heâs also dabbled in hard action with âBlack Adamâ and Netflixâs top-viewed âRed Notice.â Heâs currently at work on Warner Bros.â âHello Kittyâ animated film, set to hit theaters in July 2028.
