Sara Bareilles has released a music video for her new song “Just a Kid” featuring archival footage from her friendship with Chad Joseph, who sadly passed away nearly six years ago.
The song is featured on the Grammy-winning singer’s new album Good Grief, which deals with a lot of the heartbreak and grief she has been through in recent years.
Chad was one of Sara‘s best friends from college and he quit his job to manage her career when she was first starting out in the music industry.
“It’s a little nostalgic on purpose. It feels like college to me. It’s about my best friend. It’s a joyful, sad song,” Sara told People about the song.
“I don’t know what I would have done if he hadn’t been there. He, like, saved me,” Sara said about her late friend. “When we lose people we love, I think what I grieve is the parts that stop feeling so present. There is a piece that fades. It does, whether you want it to or not.”
Sara sings on the track, “Twenty years by your side / You gave up your dream for mine / It was a leap of a kind of faith I’d never known / We sang for you and your redhead / Surrounding your death bed / Forty years in you were just a kid.”
On the chorus she sings about being alone without her friend, “Now I’m all alone / Out on the street / Singing in the phone / They’re looking at me / And there was a time / That I might have cared / But this one’s for my best friend and he’s everywhere.”
