Following a highly competitive development deal, Netflix has ordered Sid & Zoey, an eight-episode supernatural mystery romance YA series, from Jon Kasdan (The First Time, Willow), John Shiban (Ozark), Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Bad Robot.
The series was revealed Friday as part of Netflix’s announcement of its new hub for YA content that includes several hundred titles of original or licensed movies and shows about the coming-of-age stories of young adults.
Created by Kasdan and written by Kasdan and Shiban, Sid & Zoey is about Sid, a seductive, sophisticated, and amoral teenager from New York, who is sent to live with a police chief and his family in the idyllic Mississippi town where his mother grew up. The family includes the chief’s sharp-witted, punk-rock daughter, Zoey. Resisting their mutual attraction, Sid and Zoey find themselves drawn into a dark, hidden world beneath the town’s picture-postcard facade — and a supernatural mystery that may well get them killed if they don’t kill each other first.
Kasdan and Shiban also serve as showrunners and executive produce with J.J. Abrams and Rachel Rusch Rich for Bad Robot and Jason Blum, James Wan and Rob Hackett for Blumhouse Atomic Monster. Blumhouse Atomic Monster is the studio.
Kasdan penned the screenplay for The First Time, co-wrote the screenplay for 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story and wrote and directed In The Land of Women and The Big Chill. He also directed episodes of Californication and Roadies, among others.
Shiban was a writer and executive producer on Ozark and directed episodes of NOS4A2 and Better Call Saul, among others.
