Toho and Gkids have released a new behind-the-scenes clip for “Godzilla Minus Zero,” the follow-up to Yamazaki Takashi’s Academy Award-winning “Godzilla Minus One,” ahead of the film’s North American theatrical release on Nov. 6.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” will make its world premiere as part of the Spotlight Gala selection at the 64th New York Film Festival on Sept. 26. The film opens in Japan on Nov. 3 before its wide North American release three days later.
The sequel picks up the story in 1949, two years after the events of “Godzilla Minus One,” following the Shikishima family as they confront a new catastrophe. Yamazaki returns as director for a film Toho and Gkids describe as featuring more extensive effects work than its predecessor, while keeping its post-World War II Japan setting grounded in the experiences of its characters.
“Godzilla Minus Zero” was shot entirely in Japan and is the first Japanese production to be Filmed for Imax, using high-definition digital cameras certified by Imax and sound and imagery optimized for Imax screens.
Per the film’s synopsis, Japan has spent two years struggling to rebuild after the devastation depicted in “Godzilla Minus One.” Just as the country begins to find a fragile peace, a fresh threat emerges to upend it.
Gkids, the Academy Award-winning curator, producer and distributor acquired by Toho in 2024, represents the work of filmmakers including Shinkai Makoto, Kon Satoshi, Tomm Moore and Hosoda Mamoru, and serves as the North American home of Studio Ghibli. The company’s upcoming theatrical slate also includes the Aardman feature “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom.”
