EXCLUSIVE: Alexandra Magistro, an exec at Mike Flanagan‘s Red Room Pictures, is making her feature directorial debut with Rot, a psychological thriller and body horror to star Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), as well as Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard, both part of Flanagan’s upcoming Carrie TV series.

Based on a 2024 Black List script by Geo Bradley, Rot is described by Bradley as “Repulsion by way of Cronenberg.” An official logline wasn’t given. But per the Black List, the story follows an antisocial man suffering from obsessive compulsions who is haunted by the death of his hoarder mother. The man takes on work as a trauma cleaner in hopes of facing his past, but the job soon begins to infest and unravel his mental state.

Flanagan is producing Rot under his Red Room Banner, along with Molly C. Quinn, Matthew M. Welty and Elan Gale of QWGmire, with production slated to begin in Vancouver this November. Previously, QWGmire worked with Flanagan on his Neon film The Life of Chuck; Gale is a longtime collaborator of Flanagan’s who has also worked with him on projects like The Fall of the House of Usher (also involving Quinn), The Midnight Club and Midnight Mass.

Magistro, who serves as VP of Creative at Flanagan’s company, has worked alongside the top genre filmmaker for the past eight years. Most recently, she served as an executive producer on his upcoming Universal/Blumhouse film The Exorcist: Martyrs, out March 12, 2027, and as a writer and producer on his Amazon series adaptation of Stephen King’s Carrie. She is repped by IAG and VanderKloot Law.

Koch earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his turn as Erik Menendez in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix crime drama Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Up next, he’ll be seen in Luca Guadagnino’s drama Artificial on OpenAI’s Sam Altman, which is slated for a New York Film Festival premiere and a Christmas Day release via Neon. He is repped by UTA, Strand Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Best known for leading Dan Trachtenberg’s Emmy winner Prey, Midthunder has recently been seen in Apple’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as Paramount’s Novocaine opposite Jack Quaid. Upcoming, she has Prime Video’s Carrie, out October 7, as well as the action film Painter opposite Walton Goggins. She is repped by CAA, Corner Booth Entertainment and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.

For Lillard, recent credits include Daredevil: Born Again, Cross, Scream 7 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. In addition to Carrie, he recently worked with Flanagan on his film The Life of Chuck. Other upcoming projects include Superman follow-up Man of Tomorrow and Searchlight’s Behemoth! opposite Pedro Pascal. He is repped by Verve, Strand Entertainment and Heller Law.

In addition to Carrie and the new Exorcist film, Red Room Pictures’ upcoming slate includes adaptations of Stephen King’s The Mist (Warner Bros.) and video game Warhammer (Amazon). Flanagan is repped by WME and VanderKloot Law.
