Aldon Smith has sadly passed away.
The former NFL player, who played for the San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders, and Dallas Cowboys during his career, died Saturday. He was 36.
The 49ers confirmed the tragic news in a statement shared on Saturday evening (June 13). No cause of death has been revealed at this time.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the team said. “Aldon‘s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.
Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into. Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”
Aldon was selected by the 49ers with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after playing college football at Missouri.
He quickly became one of the league’s most exciting young defensive players, recording 14 sacks as a rookie and finishing second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. He followed that up with a standout 2012 season, earning Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors after posting 19.5 sacks, which remains a 49ers single-season franchise record, per ESPN.
Aldon’s NFL career also included stops with the Raiders and Cowboys. His final NFL season came in 2020, when he appeared in 16 games for Dallas.
Our thoughts are with Aldon Smith‘s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. We have sadly lost many stars in 2026.
