Sterling K. Brown is reflecting on his time filming the later episodes of This Is Us and how it compares to his real-life as he helps his mother, Aralean navigate her needs while living with ALS.

During a recent episode of the That Was Us rewatch podcast with Chris Sullivan, Mandy Moore, and special guest Lydia Stori, a caregiving advocate, Sterling talked about how there were times when he and his character Randall had a lot in common.

On the show, Randall was dealing with his mom, Rebecca Pearson (Moore), having Alzheimer’s, while in real life Sterling was helping his mom amid her diagnosis.

“My mom has ALS, and there’s a point in time while we were shooting the show, and I remember going into the writers’ room and saying, ‘I don’t know which of my moms will pass away first,’ between my mom versus my TV mom,” he shared (via People), going on to note the “strange parallels” between himself and his television character, along with the fights they both had with their siblings.

Sterling shared that he and his siblings had to decide on the best way to “honor” Aralean‘s wishes, especially as she has been unable to speak since a few months after being diagnosed, though “her mind is still present.”

“And if it takes us a bit longer to get the information, then it takes us a little bit longer. But making sure each step of the journey, we are honoring what she wants,” he said.

There are many celebrities who are living with ALS.
