“I have to tell you, this is not what I planned for this category at all,” said Allison Janney of The Diplomat, accepting the Emmy win for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

“I’m very surprised and very, very grateful to be here,” she added. “The entire cast was just divine and I am so lucky, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Janney plays the morally challenged President Grace Penn in Season 3 of the popular Netflix political drama.

Her win tonight was somewhat unexpected. The Pitt’s Katherine LaNasa had been considered the frontrunner for a second consecutive Emmy win. In an abundance of riches, three other actresses from medical went into the night with supporting nods for the same category– Taylor Dearden, Fiona Dourif and Sepideh Moafi — which pundits had predicted might eaten into LaNasa’s votes.

Other nominees were Karolina Wydra for Pluribus and Julianne Nicholson of from Paradise.
