Ryan Reynolds has confirmed plans for another Deadpool film, despite previously suggesting that the idea was not on the cards.
The actor has portrayed the iconic character across several successful films, most-recently 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, and is reportedly set to reprise the character in Avengers: Doomsday later this year.
Appearing at Fanatics Fest, Reynolds has now suggested that another standalone project could be on the way.
Speaking in an on-stage interview, he shared (via X): “There’s stuff upcoming, there’s eventually remotely another Deadpool film.”
It comes after Reynolds said earlier this year that Deadpool is likely to be a “supporting character” going forward, with a fourth film unlikely.
“I have some stuff kind of written, but I don’t think I am ever going to centre him again,” he told Sunday Today. “He is a supporting character. He is a guy who is great in a group.”
Before that, he told The Hollywood Reporter that he was veering away from making another solo film, explaining that “centring Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall”.
“I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful.”
He then proposed: “Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted.
“His coping mechanism of deflecting shame through humour works only when used to pave over his many inadequacies. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”
Deadpool & Wolverine was a huge box office success, taking in $1.338billion ($999million) at the global box office.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday is due out in cinemas later this year after having its release date pushed back, and will see the Marvel returns of Robert Downey Jr. (this time playing Doctor Doom), Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd and Letitia Wright. Also appearing are the likes of the Fantastic Four’s Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn as well as X-Men stars Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, to name a few.
