Sugababes are officially back with a new era!
The British girl group, made up of original members Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhán Donaghy, released their new single “Ghost” on Thursday (September 24) while announcing their long-awaited self-titled album.
Sugababes will arrive on February 12, 2027, and marks the original trio’s first full studio album together since their 2000 debut One Touch.
And there’s a very personal story behind the lyrics to their new song!
What Are Sugababes’ “Ghost” Lyrics About?
In a new interview with British Vogue, Siobhán revealed that “Ghost” was inspired by her experience with her first love.
“It came from something that happened to me with my first love,” she explained. “He essentially ghosted me before we even had the terminology for it.”
The song explores moving on from a past relationship while realizing that the other person is still haunted by what they had together.
On the track, Mutya sings about having already metaphorically buried the relationship and held a “funeral” for it, while the trio later turn their attention to an ex who seemingly hasn’t been able to do the same.
The song includes the cutting line, “one of us needs therapy / And I know it isn’t me.“
Siobhán told Vogue that when the real-life relationship ended, she joked that it might have been easier if her ex had died because of the unusual experience of grieving someone who was still alive.
“There’s something strange about grieving someone who’s still out there,” she explained.
“Ghost” was written by Mutya, Keisha and Siobhán alongside Jon Shave and Wayne Hector, with Jon producing the track.
Sugababes Announce Their New Album
Along with the song, Sugababes confirmed that their new album is officially finished and will be released on February 12, 2027.
“We knew from the beginning that we didn’t want to rush this record,” the group told fans while announcing the project. “We wanted to give it the time it needed and make something we genuinely loved.”
The group said that as the project came together, it became clear that there was only one appropriate title: Sugababes. They also revealed that “Ghost” was always intended to be the first song listeners heard from the completed album.
The 12-track album will include previously released songs “Jungle,” “Modern Love,” “Shook” and “Weeds,” as well as new tracks “Peace and Love,” “Love Language,” “After All,” “Plot Twist,” “Scorpio,” “Ain’t It Funny” and “Full Circle.”
British Vogue reports that the record moves through multiple genres, including UK garage, trip-hop, dance-pop and orchestral sounds. The album artwork was also shot by Liz Collins, who photographed the artwork for the group’s 2000 debut One Touch.
The group has also made several physical editions available for pre-order, including signed vinyl and CDs.
