In a Sunday (July 19) appearance on James Corden’s After Hours podcast, the youngest son of King Charles weighed in on the long-running debate about which of the U.K.’s many famous men named Harry is the most recognizable. Prince Harry seemed reluctant to answer at first — “There’s a conflict of interest here,” he said with a laugh initially — but ultimately gave his two cents after Corden and co-host Rio Ferdinand encouraged him to be “bold.”
“Be bold?” the Spare author said. “Harry Styles [first], Harry Kane [second].”
After a long pause, Prince Harry conceded that he thinks he’s in third place, “equal” to J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter character. How will they settle the tie? “We’ll have a Quidditch off,” the prince quipped.
Indeed, Styles has a substantial case behind him for the most famous British Harry. The star has notched four No. 1 songs and three No. 1 albums on the U.K. charts, and his 2022 single “As It Was” reigned atop the Billboard Global 200 for 15 weeks. A three-time Grammy winner, he also recently made history in London with a record 12 nights at Wembley Stadium earlier in July.
But if you’re gauging fame levels using online search trends, both Kane — star player of England’s national soccer team — and Potter outrank the prince and the pop star. In the past month, which saw Kane help lead his country to a third-place finish in the World Cup, the athlete’s name averaged a far greater search volume in the U.K. on Google Trends, while data from the past year shows the fictional wizard outranking the others by far.
