Following a beta launch in New Zealand, Spotify is expanding its new algorithm tweaking tools with the launch of “Taste Profile” in the US.
On Wednesday, Spotify began rolling out its new “Taste Profile” feature to Premium subscribers in the United States after a beta launch in New Zealand. The feature enables users to see how Spotify understands their listening tastes, and they can request changes using natural language commands via AI to tweak their recommendations.
Taste Profile uses Spotify’s AI and was initially unveiled at SXSW. At the time, the feature was only available in a beta test for users in New Zealand. Now, its introduction in the U.S. will put the feature to the test in Spotify’s largest traffic and revenue market.
Tech Crunch aptly describes the feature as being handed the keys to Spotify’s algorithm. Taste Profile shows you how the platform chooses what audio to suggest across music and audio, including content in its Discover Weekly playlist, Made for You recommendations, and the ever-popular year-end Spotify Wrapped.
However, those recommendations don’t always reflect a user’s tastes over time. But with the ability to directly edit your Taste Profile, Spotify can better understand what changes to make, such as asking for more or less of a certain genre or artist or requesting more variety. You can even remove recommendations for content you regularly stream but don’t want to see more of, like sleep sounds or your kids’ music you play in the car.
Spotify previously let users remove certain content from their recommendations, but it was based on excluding certain tracks or playlists. Now, by using conversational language with Spotify’s AI, you can specify which types of content you want to see less of—even by requesting a certain “vibe” instead of just excluding specific tracks or playlists.
To access the feature on the Spotify mobile app, tap your profile pic and scroll down to Taste Profile. There, you can check out how Spotify currently understands your tastes across audio on the platform. Under “Tell us more,” you can conversationally tell the AI what you’d like to adjust. Changes will be reflected within “a few hours.”
Notably, the feature is still in beta, but launching in the U.S. is an excellent way for the company to iron out any remaining bugs. Spotify hasn’t announced when Taste Profile might see a wider launch.
