EXCLUSIVE: Joanne Froggatt (MobLand, Downton Abbey) has officially joined the cast of the MGM+ series The Magnificent Seven. The news follows Deadline’s report in May, confirming she was in talks to board the TV western remake. Joining Froggatt as a series regular is Amy Forsyth (The Gilded Age, Coda).
They join the previously announced cast that includes Matt Dillon as Chris Adams, Will Patton as Cyrus T. Clemons, Michael Ealy as Vin Tanner, and Danny Pino as Santiago “Santi” Vega.
Set in the tumultuous 1880s American frontier, The Magnificent Seven follows seven gifted but flawed mercenaries hired to protect a peaceful Quaker village after it is massacred by mercenaries working for a ruthless land baron trying to seize their land. As the team embeds itself and prepares to defend against overwhelming odds, they grapple with a central question: Is violence acceptable to defend people whose faith is based on non-violence? The series explores the backstories of each of the Seven, what’s at stake for them, and why they choose this mission—delving into themes of honor, sacrifice, redemption, morality, and faith.
Froggatt will play Harriet Talbot, who is sharp, unflinching, and unwilling to back down. Born into poverty in Boston, Harriet married a wealthy merchant who turned out to be cruel in every way a man can be. When she found herself pregnant, she realized that she could not stay with this man. She barely escaped him with the clothes on her back and found her way to a home for wayward women — where she was encouraged to give the baby up for adoption. Lost and with nowhere to turn, she happened upon a Quaker community that took her in without question. The community became her home and her faith.
Wanting to marry and settle down, she is matched with Samuel in a Quaker community all the way out in Wyoming. Shortly after she arrives, and minutes after the ceremony, Samuel is killed in Skelton in an effort to scare them off their land. Harriet cannot stand idly by. She sets out to find protection, and it’s through her that Chris is drawn into the mission. Her strength isn’t in firepower. It’s in conviction.
Forsyth will play Katie “Deadeye” Dalton, wry, sarcastic, and emotionally guarded. Katie learned to shoot from her father on the family’s farm. When a Wild West show came through, she was recruited and given the moniker “Deadeye Dalton,” the fastest gun in the west. As their star attraction, she dutifully sent money home — and during that stretch crossed paths with Vin (Ealy) in a brief, vivid fling neither quite forgot.
After years on the stage, she finally made it back home to see her family, only to find the house empty, with no sign of what had happened to them. Distraught, she started drinking. The drinking got worse, and one night her aim slipped, and she killed her co-star in front of a crowd. The years since have been a slow drift from one dead end to the next, chasing rumors of her brothers that go nowhere. Tired. Faded. Still dangerous with a gun, but haunted.
The series is written and executive produced by Tim Kring (Heroes, Touch), alongside executive producers Donald De Line (Billy the Kid, Wayward Pines), Lawrence Mirisch, Bruce Kaufman, and Matt Dillon. Casting by Seth Yanklewitz. MGM+ Studios and MGM Television Studios are producing.
Froggatt is represented by Conway van Gelder Grant, Paradigm Talent Agency, and Principal Entertainment LA. Forsyth is repped by Gersh, David Dean Management, and AMI Canada.
