Michael has become a global phenomenon, crossing the $960 million threshold on its way to gross $1 billion worldwide and shattering numerous records.
Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic continues to rewrite box office history across the globe at just shy of $960 million, with data from Brazil, Japan, and now Russia suggesting the film is well on its way to grossing $1 billion. It’s also broken countless records, including becoming the highest-grossing biographical film and highest-grossing music biopic of all time.
Currently, Michael is holding firm at #2 on the 2026 worldwide box office chart, with just $40 million left to go to cross the $1 billion threshold. That’s after data from Russia confirmed that the film became the first this year to cross $20 million in the country. Moreover, Michael only dropped about 10% in Japan from its debut weekend, and remains atop Brazil’s yearly film chart.
Earlier, the film dethroned Bohemian Rhapsody as the highest-grossing music biopic of all time, surpassing $911.9 million worldwide, with $358.6 million domestically and $553.3 million internationally. With that, it notched even more world records, including having the largest global opening weekend ever for a music biopic, becoming the highest-grossing domestic biopic of all time—and the most successful biopic in history.
Now, Michael has earned $367.9 million domestically and an impressive $591.7 million internationally, with overseas markets tallying nearly 62% of its worldwide total. In the United States, it’s the second-biggest movie of 2026 behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, while the UK remains the film’s largest overseas market with a gross of $69.8 million. France follows closely with $55.4 million, Germany with $35.6 million, Brazil with $33.7 million, Australia with $31.9 million, Mexico with $31.9 million, and Italy with $29.4 million.
The film’s Asian launches are furthering its momentum. Japan has generated $7.45 million after opening just this month, while South Korea has generated $11.6 million, and China has crossed $10.3 million.
With less than $40 million keeping Michael from the billion-dollar threshold, next week’s numbers will be more important than ever as the film continues shattering records.
