EXCLUSIVE: AMC‘s hit series Dark Winds has added a trio of talent to its cast for Season 5, including John Hoogenakke (The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, One Battle After Another) as a series regular, and Gregory Cruz (Mayans M.C., Saving Grace) in a recurring role. Additionally, Geraldine Keams will return as her Season 1 character.

Production on the new season is currently underway in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Hoogenakke will play Sheriff Mark Bishop, Gordo Sena’s (A Martinez) younger, more button-downed successor at the Scarborough County Sheriff’s Department. He allows Leaphorn to join his investigation into Sena’s murder and quickly wades into jurisdictional conflicts with Leaphorn and his officers over who’s in charge.

Cruz will play Ed Manuelito, Bernadette Manuelito’s (Jessica Matten) biological father. A WWII vet suffering PTSD upon his return from the war, he abandoned Bern after her mother’s untimely death, depositing her at boarding school. He attempts to come back into his daughter’s life fifteen years later, a better man after finding community and support through sobriety and church.

Kearns returns as Alice Benally, Emma Leaphorn’s (Deanna Allison) mother, an elder who helps Emma prepare for Bernadette and Chee’s (Kiowa Gordon) traditional Navajo wedding.

Based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman, Dark Winds is set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley and follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) of the Tribal Police as a series of seemingly unrelated crimes besiege him. The closer he digs into the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past.

He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee also has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Together, the two men battle the forces of evil, each other, and their own demons on the path to salvation.

Season 4 focused on the search for a missing Navajo girl, which takes Leaphorn, Chee, and Manuelito from the safety of the Navajo Nation to the gritty terrain of 1970s Los Angeles in a race against the clock to save her from an obsessive killer with ties to organized crime.

Details regarding the plot of Season 5 are currently under wraps.

Dark Winds is created by Graham Roland and is showrun by John Wirth, both of whom also executive produce. Additional executive producers include the late Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin, McClarnon, Chris Eyre, Tina Elmo, Jim Chory, Thomas Brady, Max Hurwitz, Vince Gerardis, and Anne Hillerman.

Hoogenakker is repped by Paradigm, Industry Entertainment, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman; Cruz is repped by Mitchell K. Stubbs & Associates and MB Management; Keams is repped by MB Mgmt.
