Zara Larsson is opening up about her music “breakthrough” and why she doesn’t want to be categorized as a new artist.
The 28-year-old singer has been steadily working in this industry for more than a decade, but her career skyrocketed this past year thanks to the success of “Midnight Sun” and the resurgence of “Lush Life.”
Zara says that her former music label was looking into submitting her for the Best New Artist category at the Grammys, but she said she didn’t want to be nominated there.

“I was speaking to my former label about this, and they were like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to see if we can put you in Best New Artist for the Grammys.’ And I’m like, I don’t even want that. That would downplay the 13 years of me being an artist. I’m not a new artist,” Zara told Perfect magazine. “But that’s why I like ‘breakthrough’. It feels like the whole world is looking at me at the same time. Before, this song was successful over here, and another song a year later was successful over there. Now it feels like it’s all coming together quite nicely.”
Zara actually is no longer eligible to be nominated in the Best New Artist category.
To receive a nomination for Best New Artist, an act can have no prior nominations. Zara was nominated for Best Dance Pop Recording for “Midnight Sun” at the 2026 Grammys. So even though her breakthrough happened during the eligibility year for the 2027 awards, Zara is ineligible.
Zara and PinkPantheress are likely to earn a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song “Stateside.”
Zara actually left her record label earlier this summer and signed to a new one.
