Selma Blair is discussing the professional and personal losses she claims followed her 2024 anti-Islam Instagram comment.
During an appearance at the Anti-Defamation League’s State of the Arts reception on Thursday (October 1) at The Jewish Museum, the actress described losing professional support and brand partnerships after the controversy.
Her remarks, reported by The Hollywood Reporter and the ADL, also addressed rebuilding her career and the lasting effect she says the experience had on her family.
Speaking at the event, Selma said members of her representation team stopped working with her and some friendships ended.

My lawyer was gone. My publicist was gone. My book agent was gone. My book publicist was gone. My social media manager was gone. My son’s godmother was gone – my best friend. While some friends in the business quietly stood by me, most of them were gone. And of course, my manager, my supposed friend of 30 years, and a Jew, was gone too. I still don’t know what any of them were thinking. No one returned my calls.”
The controversy began in February 2024, when she posted a comment attacking Islam beneath an Instagram video discussing the Israel-Hamas war.
She wrote the following comment, “Deport all these terrorist supporting goons. Islam has destroyed Muslim countries and then they come here and destroyed minds. They know they are liars. Twisted justifications. May they meet their fate.”
She subsequently deleted the comment and issued an apology in a lengthy statement. During Thursday’s speech, Selma said she still stood by her apology. She also described her belief that antisemitism contributed to the response she experienced.
She also said that her circumstances have changed and she is working again and has assembled a new team.
Selma announced Hineni, a documentary about antisemitism that she said would include conversations with people who disagree with her. The project was presented as part of her next chapter following the period she described in her speech.
