The English-language remakes of the Culpables movies and the Spanish-language originals have crushed the latest Prime Video viewing charts.
There are five films in all, three Spanish and two English-language releases, with a third English-language movie already filmed. They are based on Mercedes Ron’s New York Times bestselling book trilogy. The YA films have swept the Prime Video charts, occupying five of the top 10 slots in the most-watched original films ranking for June 15-21.
Nicole Wallace and Gabriel Guevara play Noah and Nick in the three Spanish films, which are produced by Banijay’s Pokeepsie Films: Culpa Mia, Culpa Tuya and Culpa Nuestra. Wallace has since inked a talent deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
Asha Banks and Matthew Broome take the lead roles in the English movies, the second of which, Your Fault: London, was released last week. It went straight in at No.1 in the Prime Video films ranking while predecessor My Fault: London placed third. Separating the two was Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War in second place.
The popularity of the London films has spurred viewing and rewatching of the Spanish movies that went before them. Culpa Nuestra came in at sixth, Culpa Mia seventh and Culpa Tuya ranked ninth.
Mercedes Ron said: “Nothing excites me more than seeing my films find audiences in different corners of the world. Knowing that people are inspired to go back and discover the original versions makes that journey even more rewarding.”
Prime Video does not release specific viewing figures, only rankings, but we do know that the original Culpables franchise topped 100 million viewers worldwide, becoming Prime Video’s most-watched International Originals globally, per our earlier reporting.
Prime Video has planted a flag in the YA space, and there is more to come under Nicole Clemens, now Head of International Originals, including adaptations such as Boys of Tommen. The streamer has established a ‘House of Ron’ to adapt the author’s work. Next up is Together (Marfil), the first movie instalment in the successful Enfrentados two-book series. It drops September 9.
Culpables fans, meanwhile, are on tenterhooks, awaiting an announcement of a fourth movie after Ron wrote ‘Culpa Vuestra’, a new book in the series. Prime Video and Ron have been tight-lipped, but the success of the franchise is already undeniable.
