The original costume worn by Mike Myers in The Cat In The Hat has gone viral after going up for auction.

The Austin Powers star played the character in the critically maligned 2003 live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ classic children’s book, alongside Dakota Fanning and Spencer Breslin as the two child leads, as well as Alec Baldwin and Kelly Preston.

Now, Myers’ original costume is being put up for auction by the memorabilia company Propstore, and the images shared for the lot have been spreading online, with the red and white striped hat and oversized bow tie taking on a horrific, haunted energy without a person inside them.

The auction will run from August 26 to 29 and you can find out more here.

Some have pointed out the irony that Mike Myers shares his name with the serial killer from the Halloween franchise, Michael Myers, and drawn comparisons between the two face masks.

It also follows a recent TikTok trend where users have recut clips from the film to make them into grim horror videos.

The Cat In The Hat was directed by regular Tim Burton collaborator Bo Welch and was considered a box office failure, grossing $134milion against a budget of $109million. It was nominated for 10 Razzies and sits on a 10 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film’s poor reception led to the widow of Dr. Seuss forbidding any future live-action film adaptations of her husband’s work.

An animated version of the story is in the works, with Bill Hader voicing the title character and Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito and America Ferrera also in the voice cast. It will be released in cinemas on November 6.
