Colombia has been struck with a powerful earthquake of 7.4 magnitude on Monday (Aug. 10).

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the epicenter occurred in San Jose Del Palmar, located in the Chocó region about 250 miles west of Bogotá, and affected nearby cities Pereira, Quibdo, Cali and Manizales, leaving more than 100 people dead and hundreds of damaged buildings, at the time of publishing, according to The Associated Press. 

The earthquake was also felt in Ecuador and Panama with minor damages reported. 

On social media, a wave of Colombian artists began using their social media platforms to raise awareness about the devastating disaster and offer support.

“Beloved Colombia, my heart goes out to everyone who felt today’s earthquake and to the families enduring moments of distress,” Shakira expressed in an Instagram story. “In times like these, we Colombians know how to come together and support one another. All my strength and love go to my homeland. Let’s hold each other close and stay tuned for instructions so we can help as soon as possible.”

Carlos Vives noted in a video: “It’s a complex situation—but whenever things like this happen, we Colombians roll up our sleeves and get to work. Let us stand by our brothers and sisters during these difficult times.”

“A strong earthquake has struck Colombia, and I still haven’t been able to get in touch with many of my relatives,” Goyo, who’s native of Chocó but resides in Miami, noted in a post. “Although I am very sad and lack much information, I pray to and trust in God that my loved ones—and yours—are safe. Don’t lose faith!” 

“I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach after hanging up with friends who told me what they went through,” Camilo shared on his Instagram stories as well. “It was so frightening and painful. We are waiting to find out very soon the best ways to help so we can pitch in.”

Maluma also reacted: “It is heartbreaking to see everything happening in Colombia; I send a heartfelt embrace to all the victims’ families, and we are ready to help. Now, more than ever, we need that strength and unity.”

Greeicy is reposting many videos on her Instagram stories from the affected communities, as well as information on how to help.  

Meanwhile, Latin acts such as Nicky Jam, Enrique Bunbury, Lele Pons and Victor Manuelle are also using their platforms to continue spreading the word and sharing useful information. “I have no words. My heart is with you, with every family,” Nicky Jam shared. “Colombia has always given me love, and today it is my turn to give it back. Stay strong—you are not alone.

The earthquake in Colombia comes almost two months after twin earthquakes— magnitude 7.2 and 7.5—struck Venezuela on June 24, causing the collapse of multiple buildings in La Guaira and Caracas, and leaving more than 6,000 dead and nearly 20,000 homeless.
