EXCLUSIVE: John Scherer has joined Nocturnal Entertainment, the recently launched financier and production company led by Keaton Heinrichs and Akiva Nemetsky, as Head of Development.

In his new role, Scherer will help to foster the company’s filmmaker-driven slate with an eye toward identifying young, singular voices that the company can help grow, regardless of experience and genre.

Prior to Nocturnal, Scherer spent a decade at Intrepid Pictures, where he worked on numerous films and TV shows — many, from Mike Flanagan — including The Life of Chuck, Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game. He worked his way up from assistant to Vice President of Development and Production, with an eye for identifying emerging talent, after beginning his career as an assistant at Radius Entertainment.

Launched in May, Nocturnal Entertainment’s aim is to give filmmakers more ways to get studio-quality films made independently. Through its sister company, NantStudios, they provide them with access to virtual production infrastructure, previs tools, and more. The company’s first film Play Dead, a WWII survival thriller from director Jaume Collet-Serra (Carry-On) that they fully financed, sold to Netflix in May, as we first reported. Noah Jupe and Matthias Schweighöfer star in the film penned by Natalie Conway and Peter Stanley-Ward. Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert produced for Ghost House Pictures, alongside J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules for BoulderLight, Dane Eckerle for Bad Grey, and Nemetsky and Heinrichs for Nocturnal.
