Adrienne Warren is set to star in the previously announced Off Broadway musical adaptation of Imitation of Life, the Fannie Hurst novel that spawned two classic Hollywood films.
Warren will play Delilah, the role played by Louise Beavers in the 1934 film and by Juanita Moore in Douglas Sirk’s 1959 remake (the character was called Annie in that version).
The musical features a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage, an original score by EGOT winner John Legend and direction by double Tony nominee Whitney White (taking over for the previously announced Liesl Tommy, who remains a producer).
The world premiere, six-week limited engagement through January 3, 2027, is set to begin previews on Saturday, November 21, at The Griffin Theater at The Shed. Opening night is Thursday, December 3.
“It is truly an honor to join this incredible team in bringing Imitation of Life to the stage,” Warren, a Tony winner for her starring role in Broadway’s Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, said in a statement. “Over the years, developing the role of Delilah has become a highlight of my career. She is a character I have grown to love deeply, and I cannot wait to share her with audiences.”
Said Legend, “Imitation of Life tells a deeply emotional story of a remarkable woman’s journey, and I’m thrilled to know that Adrienne Warren will bring Delilah to life. Adrienne is an incredibly gifted performer who brings heart, humanity and radiance to every character she plays. I’m so excited that the world will hear her magnificent voice on the first musical that I’ve composed.”
First published in 1933, Hurst’s novel, set in the 1920s and ’30s, tells the stories of two single mothers -one Black, one white – and their daughters as all four build a life together. A central conflict in the story arises when housekeeper Delilah’s daughter attempts to “pass” as white, with the musical addressing such issues as race, identity, motherhood, ambition and belonging.
Additional casting, as well as design and creative team members will be announced at a later date.
A co-production of The Shed and National Black Theatre, the new musical is produced by National Black Theatre, Universal Theatrical Group, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Get Lifted Film Co., Crocodile Eyes, LD Entertainment and The Shed.
