EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures has preemptively acquired We Are Your Pets, a high-concept family comedy pitch from Cameron Ali Fay, who will write the script for the studio, with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment aboard to produce.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. Sources said Ali Fay brought the pitch to Amblin, which then set up the project at Uni. Senior Executive Vice President of Production Development Erik Baiers is overseeing for the studio.

Ali Fay is an Iranian-American multi-hyphenate who made his feature directorial debut with Maybe It’s You, a 2023 romantic comedy for Universal/Peacock. Recently, he wrote an original action comedy for Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios, as well as the action Western Thorny Rose, which has Paul Feig attached to direct and produce. He also adapted the novel There’s a Word for That for Hilary Swank to produce and star and penned Brother Nature for Paramount.

Ali Fay is the co-founder of the WGA’s Middle Eastern Writers Committee and the only person ever to be selected for both the writers’ and directors’ programs from Sony. Currently, he’s attached to direct two of his Black List scripts: This Is Going to Hurt, as well as Until You for Di Novi Pictures. He is represented by Paradigm, Kaplan/Perrone and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols.

Coming off Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, Amblin Entertainment’s upcoming slate includes Gremlins 3, Alex Kister’s The Mandela Catalogue and Zach Cregger’s The Flood.
