Apple has revealed that the fifth season of the Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston-led drama series, which will premiere next year, will be its last.
The move is not a surprise as there’s been talk that the show is heading towards the finish line. It marks the end of one of the streamer’s first original series – the show was handed a two-season, straight-to-series order, alongside Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories in 2017, two years before it launched its service.
Season five is currently in production and features a host of new stars including Jeff Daniels, Jesse Williams, Sean Hayes, Lizzy Caplan and Reneé Rapp joining Witherspoon, Aniston, Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass, Nestor Carbonell, Karen Pittman, Nicole Beharie and Jon Hamm
Season four took place in spring 2024, almost two years after the events of season three.
[SPOILER ALERT] Following the completion of the UBA-NBN merger, the team was preparing for the Olympics in Paris and there are deepfake scandals, high-stakes environmental cover up by Wolf River and all the usual corporate politics.
Witherspoon’s Bradley Jackson ends up in a gulag in Belarus and Alex Levy, played by Aniston was pushed out of the company by Marion Cotillard’s Celine Dumont. Alex threatens to sue the conglomerate with help from her father, played by Jeremy Irons, and Duplass’ Chip Black, and the team, aided by Billy Crudup’s Cory Ellison, ends up getting a confession from Celine, who escapes to France, forcing the company to find a new CEO.
In Season 5, Daniels plays self-made billionaire Lukas, who runs an investment firm, Williams plays Vernon, UBN’s new Head of News, while Rapp plays a young rising star in the news division.
The Morning Show premiered on November 1, 2019, the day that Apple launched its streaming service; season two premiered in September 2021, season three premiered in September 2023 and season four premiered in September 2025, suggesting that season five may well premiere in September 2027.
The show has garnered 28 Emmy nominations across its first four seasons, largely for season three, which received 16 nods, including for Outstanding Drama Series. Season four, however, only received one nomination with Crudup up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
With the show ending, Apple was keen to highlight that many of the cast and crew have plenty of other business with the company. Witherspoon exec produces Lucky, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, which recently launched; Hamm stars in and exec produces Your Friends and Neighbors; Aniston is developing new shows through her Echo Films and Leder and Stoudt both have overall deals with the company.
The Morning Show is produced by Media Res in association with Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Aniston’s Echo Films. Charlotte Stoudt serves as showrunner and Mimi Leder directs. Exec producers including Witherspoon, Aniston, Stoudt, Leder, Michael Ellenberg, Lauren Neustadter, Kristin Hahn, Zander Lehmann and Micah Schraft.
