For Anna Faris, mom guilt wasn’t a new phenomenon.
The Scary Movie actress revealed that it didn’t take welcoming her now-14-year-old son Jack—whom she shares with ex Chris Pratt—for her to experience the nearly universal emotion for mothers.
“I already had a healthy dose,” Faris admitted in an exclusive E! News interview alongside Spa Weekend costars Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann and Michelle Buteau. “Like, a blanket of guilt. I’m doing something wrong all the time.”
And the 49-year-old felt there was even more pressure on her as a mom in Hollywood.
“I think becoming a mom, especially in Los Angeles, it’s hard to feel like you’re doing everything right,” Faris continued. “There’s a lot of competition.”
Indeed, there was a period for Faris where it was hard for her to grasp her new identity after welcoming Jack in 2012.
“What did it mean to go from actress—comedic actress, spoof movie queen,” she reflected, “To the identity of mom. Being worried with what that means. I wish that future generations don’t have that same burden of identity. Of perfection, the pressure. We’re all really flawed.”
Luckily, for her part, Faris’ son has helped her feel more confident in her role as his mom.
“I am proud that he has a deep sense of justice and I find him just fascinating,” she mused. “I’m so lucky. I'm just so lucky that I have this incredible, fascinating boy.”
Still, she admitted self-doubt still creeps in, adding, “I hope I’m doing OK.”
Although Faris highlighted that breaking down some of the stigma of motherhood will take time, she expressed hope that Spa Weekend will give moms—and anyone raising kids—space to step back from their stress.
“What I hope for this movie,” she expressed, “I hope multiple groups of women or people are inspired to have a super fun lunch on a Saturday. Like a late lunch. Plan a spa weekend getaway that they can manage to do in like, five years and then go see our movie.”
