The planned Kpop Demon Hunters sequel will definitely be released in cinemas as well as on Netflix, said the streamer’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

Speaking at an event on Wednesday evening (September 30) Sarandos confirmed that some of Netflix’s biggest films, including the upcoming KPop Demon Hunters sequel, will get a “very broad theatrical release” run before being available to stream.

“What we’re doing is looking at this model and saying, ‘Okay, how do we serve movie lovers who may want to see this movie in a theatre.’ How do we not harm value to Netflix and how do we position the film best in the world?,” he explained (via The Wrap).

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s upcoming drama La Bola Negra is getting a full 45-day theatrical release in November.

The same month The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, David Fincher’s sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, will become the first Netflix film to get an IMAX launch. Greta Gerwig’s Narnia and a new, animated version of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory have both been confirmed to hit cinemas next year as well.

“Movies in the box office are not necessarily bigger on Netflix,” Sarandos continued. “The most passionate audience went to see it in the theatre, so by the time it comes to Netflix, you’ve lost that passionate audience, and you got the people that go, ‘Oh, I meant to see that,’ or ‘I’ll get around to that.’” He went on to say that if Netflix’s 2025 period drama Train Dreams was played in cinemas it would have been a “net positive” for the arthouse film.

Since it launched on Netflix in June 2025, KPop Demon Hunters has been streamed more than 325million times, and has been screened in cinemas around the world. A sequel was confirmed in November but no release date has been announced – though it’s unlikely to be ready before 2030.

Plot details are also currently being kept under wraps. “The world [of Kpop Demon Hunters] is so rich – the world of the demons and the pop star [element], what happened to Jinu. There’s so much we could expand into,” said Sony boss Damien de Froberville earlier this year.

We do know that a live-action adaptation of KPop Demon Hunters probably isn’t going to happen though, despite rumours. “There are so many elements of the tone and the comedy that are so suited for animation,” said creator Maggie Kang. “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world. It would feel too grounded. So totally it wouldn’t work for me.”
