Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower has shot down a fan theory about a secret extra episode, also known as ‘Conformity Gate’.
Following the conclusion of the Netflix show on New Year’s Eve last year, many viewers theorised that the show’s ending – in which Eleven’s (Millie Bobby Brown) fate was left ambiguous – wasn’t the true conclusion, and was an illusion created by villain Vecna (played by Bower).
However, they were left disappointed when an extra episode didn’t materialise, and Bower denied the idea when asked about the craziest fan theory he has heard.
“That there was gonna be another episode,” he told Entertainment Weekly at San Diego Comic-Con. “Everyone was like, ‘Conformity Gate, there’s gonna be a ninth episode.’ I was like, ‘If there is, I’m not in it! I shot what I shot, I’m done.’”
He called the theory “pretty crazy”, suggesting there was a lot of “confirmation bias” online based on the actions of the cast.
“Anything that we did was like, ‘Well, that just proves it,’” the actors added. “They were like, ‘That ‘s it, it’s coming.’ And I still get asked the question, even now. People are like, ‘Is there a ninth episode coming?’ I’m like, ‘It’s been six months! If there is, they’re kinda behind.’”
Stranger Things actor Matthew Modine previously revealed that he wasn’t a fan of the show’s conclusion, adding that he was hoping that the extra episode theory was true.
Last month, Brown revealed that only three people know Eleven’s true fate after the finale, recalling that she texted creators The Duffer Brothers.
“They were like, ‘Do not tell anyone. Because we made it a secret kind of pledge,’” she told Happy Sad Confused. “No one else knows. It’s just us three. And what we do with that information, it’ll be up to them.”
Meanwhile, the show was recently shut out of the Emmy nominations for Best Drama, as well as the acting categories, with many fans suggesting Bower should have been nominated.
Earlier this month, Biffy Clyro brought out Bower to perform ‘Machines’ with them at their Finsbury Park show.
