Grand Theft Auto 6 is going up against The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Remake next month, and now a Saturday Night Live sketch has weighed in on the “Barbenheimer” of gaming.
After several delays, Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch November 19, 2026. It’s been reported that the sequel to 2013’s Grand Theft Auto 5 is the most expensive video game ever made, and gaming bosses are expecting people to take the day off work just so they can play.
Several games have moved their release date to avoid Grand Theft Auto 6 but Nintendo recently confirmed they will launch their “reborn” remake of 1998’s The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time on November 5.
The clash of big game releases is being compared to 2023’s “Barbeheimer”, which saw Hollywood blockbuster Barbie going up against Christopher Nolan’s historical thriller Oppenheimer in cinemas around the world – and now Saturday Night Live have got involved.
As part of ‘The Weekend Update’, host Colin Jost spoke to Grand Theft Auto 6’s protagonist Jason (played by Marcello Hernández) and The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time’s Link (Mikey Day) about the “epic showdown”.
“I don’t know much about gaming because I’ve had sex, but I’m told that people are calling your releases the ‘Barbeheimer’ of video games,” starts Jost. “Nah, the only way this is like ‘Barbenheimer’ is that I blow stuff up,” replied Jason. “And [Link] looks like a little blonde girl.”
Hernández’ Jason then described a day in his life: “I woke up, I broke my thicc Latina girlfriend out of prison, and then I smashed her. Then I robbed a bank, stole a car, went to the airport, stole a Boeing Dreamliner and then I landed that next to a strip club. At the strip club, I spent $1million on a girl named Cinnamon who hates her dad.”
“Boring,” replied Day’s version of Link. “Meanwhile over in Hyrule, I woke up, bought some magic beans from a shopkeeper and then played my ocarina.”
After arguing about Link’s tunic and the different weapons that can be found in each game, the two gaming icons made their closing pitch. “America, GTA 6 this November: Destruction, chaos and sex,” said Jason while Link promised “puzzles and light combat” in the Ocarina Of Time remake. Last week, Grand Theft Auto 6 developers Rockstar confirmed that the game’s map would be twice as big as Grand Theft Auto 5, and far more detailed. Meanwhile, some Zelda fans believe the Ocarina Of Time Remake will end with news that an updated take on 2000’s The Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is in the works at Nintendo.
