Fernando Alonso has finally revealed whether or not he will be retiring from Formula 1 at the end of this year.
After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last weekend and ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia this weekend, the 45-year-old two-time F1 drivers’ champion is announcing if he’s staying or leaving after 2026.

In a new video message shared to the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team’s official Instagram account, Fernando revealed he will be retiring from Formula 1, eventually!
The driver has extended his contract through 2027.
“F1 has been great to me. I’ve had an incredible career. I’ve traveled around the world. I’ve raced for more than 23 years, more than 400 grand prix, and I achieved more than what I ever dreamed of,” the Spanish driver said in the video. “It took me a little bit of time to make my decision, but now, I have things very clear on my mind.”
“I will retire from Formula 1,” he teased. “But not yet. I still feel fast, motivated, and a huge passion for Formula 1 and for this sport. So, yeah, I’m so happy to keep racing in the highest category and it is my life.”

“I’m very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin. I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level,” Fernando added in a statement, via F1.com.
“I’m committed for the long term with this team and to helping us succeed. I truly believe in what we are building: we have strong leadership, incredible people, partners and facilities,” he continued. “I look forward to making more memories on the race track in front of the passionate fans. Their energy creates an atmosphere that inspires me and is what makes our sport special.”
Fernando previously teased a possible retirement earlier this summer, fueling speculation about his future.
Fernando Alonso’s teammate Lance Stroll also signs on for 2027
In addition to Fernando‘s return, his teammate, Lance Stroll, has also been announced to be returning for 2027.
“I’m very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term. I’ve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team,” Lance shared.
“There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me,” he added. “I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals.”
So far this year, with the new regulations, Aston Martin is sitting 10th, out of 11 teams, in the constructor’s championship, only ahead of new team, Cadillac.
Aston Martin’s only points this year came from Fernando, who placed 10th in Monaco and ninth in the Netherlands.
Fernando‘s current standing in the drivers’ championship is 19th, while Lance is in 21st.
