EXCLUSIVE: Neon has set the North American release date for Na Hong-Jin Cannes sci-fi hit Hope as Wednesday, September 9th.
Following its well-received premiere at the 79th Cannes Film Festival where it screened In Competition, the action-sci-fi recently secured one of the highest volumes of overseas pre-sales for a Korean film with more than 200 territory sales worldwide.
Set in the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, the film follows “police outpost chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) who are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of local hunters, including Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading.”
Starring are Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, with Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender.
In Deadline’s Cannes review for the film, Pete Hammond wrote: “Fasten your seat belts. Cannes just unveiled Hope, a sci-fi alien monster mash from South Korean director Na Hong-Jin that never lets up for a minute of its two-hour, 40-minute running time and out-Hollywoods anything of its kind made by Hollywood.”
Pic was written and directed by Na Hong-Jin, produced by Forged Films, co-produced by Plus M Entertainment, Westworld, and presented and distributed by Plus M Entertainment. The Korean release is lined up for this summer.
