Joachim Rønning’s The Saga Company, Ridley Scott’s Scott Free and Live Nation Studios are behind new feature Halftime Hero, we can officially confirm.
Anson Boon (MobLand), Ellie Bamber (Ebenezer) and Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes) are starring in the movie, which is based on the remarkable true story from 1994 when well known soccer coach Harry Redknapp pulled a mouthy fan from the stands to play in a professional match…with unexpected consequences.
Ole Sanders will direct and write the screenplay based on Jeff Maysh’s Guardian piece, ‘The day Harry Redknapp brought a fan on to play for West Ham’. Producers are positioning the movie as “Billy Elliot meets The Full Monty.” Production is currently underway in London. The project was first revealed by UK tabloid The Sun.
The synopsis reads: “Set in 1994 London. Just as big-hearted, big-mouthed football supporter, Steve “Pringle” Davies (Boon) hits rock bottom, he gets pulled from the crowd by coach Harry Redknapp (Marsan) at halftime to play a professional game for his beloved West Ham United. It’s a million-to-one shot that just might save his relationship with his first love, Penny (Bamber), and get this glory-hunter’s life back on track.”
Joachim Rønning is producing for The Saga Company, Michael Pruss is producing for Scott Free, Stella Bulochnikow is producing for Live Nation Studios, and Stewart Le Marechal and Anna Mohr-Pietsch produce for MetFilm.
Ryan Kroft and Michael Rapino serve as executive producers for Live Nation Studios. Jillian Kay serves as executive producer for Scott Free, and Avital Siegel will co-produce. Anson Boon will also executive-produce.
Writer-director Sanders is a commercial and music video director who is making his feature film debut with Halftime Hero.
