Shortly after the legendary golfer was involved in a rollover car crash around 2 p.m. local time in Jupiter Island, Fla., March 27, he was arrested and charged with driving under the influence.
âOur DUI investigators came to the scene here, and Mr. Woods did exemplify signs of impairment,â Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said in a press conference. âThey did do some in depth roadside tests. And when it was determined, he was placed under arrest and taken to the Martin County Jail.â
Budensiek explained that his team was not âsuspicious of alcohol being involved in this case,â but alleged the golfer was impaired by some type of medication or other drug as he appeared âlethargic."
âMr. Woods did a breathalyzer test, blew triple zeros, but when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused,â the sheriff continued, âand so he's been charged with DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test."Â
Budensiek noted that authorities may never know what caused Tigerâs impairment.Â
âHe has a right to refuse that test,â he continued. âThere is a Florida statute which he will be charged with for refusing to take that test, but we will never get definitive results as to what he was impaired on at the time of the crash.â
The collision occurred as Woods was driving his Land Rover at a high rate of speed on a two-lane road, per Budensiek. The 50-year-old tried to overtake a pickup truck, but ended up clipping the other vehicle. Woodsâ car flipped onto its side and he was able to âcrawl out of the passenger door of the car,â per the sheriff.
On the scene, Woods told officers about his health history, with the sheriff saying, âHe did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had. We did take that into account, but they did do some in depth roadside tests.â
E! News has reached out to a rep for Woods for comment but has not yet heard back.Â
