Boy George’s “We Will Dance Again” was removed from Bandcamp for violating its no-AI policy, but the singer claims it’s because of the song’s message.

Boy George accused Bandcamp of “bowing to the pressure of antisemites” after it removed his controversial pro-Israel song, “We Will Dance Again,” from its service. The 65-year-old singer made the accusation on social media after criticizing Bandcamp’s policy on songs made with artificial intelligence, which Boy George openly admits to using for his new track.

“So anyone trying to get a copy of ‘We Will Dance Again’ will have to wait until I record it and find a way to put it out,” he said. “They’ve taken money, so hopefully Bandcamp will refund that money. It’s very disappointing, and obviously, if you’ve got the track already, make videos, play it on the internet. Play it everywhere; get it heard.”

Bandcamp responded by saying the track was removed because it was created using AI. The platform has a strict policy disallowing music “that is generated wholly or in substantial part by AI.” But Boy George’s profile was also removed, which led the Culture Club hitmaker to call out the so-called hypocrisy.

In response, he posted another video to Instagram and shared a statement on the former Twitter, noting that Bandcamp allowed the song originally and that it “stayed there for over 24 hours.” This, he claims, “means the haters altered them or they did not like the message.”

“It seems obvious that despite the claims of Bandcamp, there is a shitload of AI-assisted music all over the website, and to deny this is not only misleading but moronic,” George claimed. “It appears they have bowed to the pressure of antisemites because the system, just like any other digital platform, cannot tell if something is AI. Or maybe the problem is internal, but I don’t buy the no AI policy because Bandcamp has it in droves.”

“Leave the creative process to the artists. Even if you don’t agree with it,” he added. “Some people [paid] a thousand pounds and many [dropped] 100 pounds. Hopefully that money will be refunded in full to those of you who paid and could not download after they shut a bitch down.”

Boy George released the song late last month, which immediately sparked backlash with its pro-Israel lyrics. The singer quickly pulled out of his scheduled appearance in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the advice of his manager, Paul “PK” Kemsley. He also parted ways with Tony Pontius, the manager of his label Boy George Presents (BGP), after Pontius was “unequivocal” in his refusal to release “We Will Dance Again” on the label.
