Mitch McConnell, the Republican senator from Kentucky, has been hospitalized since mid-June and now his wife, Elaine Chao, has released a statement on all the rumors circulating.

McConnell reportedly was hospitalized on June 14 after losing consciousness while at home in Washington, D.C. There have been few official updates on the status of his health, but just this week, reports alleged that he was brain dead.

Chao, the Former United States Secretary of Labor, actually was in China during this time frame, which raised some eyebrows, as her 84-year-old husband was still in the hospital. She was apparently there for a meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, among other people.

In a statement on Tuesday (July 7) to Louisville CBS affiliate WLKY, a spokesperson said “the secretary was on a long-planned trip in China to support her family’s philanthropic endeavors.”

“During the trip, she met with a number of people, including the US ambassador. The Senator’s health did not warrant an immediate return to the US,” the statement concluded. They also shared that she is back in the USA, and began her trip on June 12.

Meanwhile, a tweet about McConnell‘s health went viral this week from someone who claimed to have spoken with him.
