EXCLUSIVE: Ahead of Comic-Con, Amazon MGM Studios has given a formal series greenlight to Stillwater, a horror drama from Greg Berlanti (You, The Flight Attendant) and Carly Wray (Watchmen, Westworld) based on the Skybound graphic novel by Chip Zdarsky and Ramón K Pérez. The project, which has received an eight-episode order, comes from Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions and Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead).

Co-written by Berlanti and Wray, who both are under overall deals at WBTV, Stillwater is a mind-bending horror thriller that focuses on ex-con Daniel West. When Daniel receives a mysterious letter promising answers about his past and a substantial inheritance in the small town of Stillwater, he discovers a community where nothing ever ages, no one ever dies, and nobody ever gets out.

“We’re thrilled to dive into Stillwater because it’s far beyond the usual immortality story,” Berlanti and Wray said. “It’s a horror show about a community that has to decide what forever is worth, and what they’re willing to do to protect it. Chip Zdarsky & Ramón K Pérez created an extraordinary world that’s both terrifying and deeply human, and we’re so grateful to our partners at Amazon, WBTV, and Skybound for trusting us to bring such a beloved title to life. We couldn’t be more excited for fans, and everyone discovering this story for the first time, to meet Daniel West and all the eerie townsfolk lying in wait for him.”

Amazon landed Stillwater in a bidding war in spring 2025 with a straight-to-series order, which, since it was based on a pitch, had contingencies attached in the form of delivering a pilot script and a first-season bible. Based on that material, after a year in development, the project has been officially greenlighted and cleared for production.

“Stillwater is a truly original series that blends horror, mystery, and psychological suspense into something entirely unexpected,” said Peter Friedlander, Head of Global Television, Amazon MGM Studios. “Greg Berlanti, Carly Wray, and the incredible teams at WBTV and Skybound have created a world unlike anything audiences have seen before—one that’s unsettling, emotionally rich, and impossible to look away from. We’re thrilled to bring this remarkable story to Prime Video audiences around the world.”

Stillwater is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Wray executive produces alongside Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman and Robbie Rogers for Berlanti Productions and Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Rick Jacobs, Glenn Geller, and Chip Zdarsky for Skybound Entertainment. Former Berlanti Productions executive Jonathan Gabay also serves as executive producer.

This marks the second series order for Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV this week following the pickup at Disney+ of Afterlife With Archie, also based on a horror comic book. Berlanti Prods. and WBTV also have the upcoming Scooby-Doo! live-action series at Netflix, the HBO drama pilot How To Survive Without Me, Stillwater, as well as All American, which just launched its eighth and final season on the CW.

“Greg and Carly have brought many of pop culture’s most iconic characters and stories to life,” said Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks. “They are masters at capturing the heart of what makes a story distinct and beloved by fans. Stillwater showcases their ability to blend a mind-bending horror thriller with the harrowing complexities of immortality, power, community and what it means to be human. We thank our partners at Prime Video and Skybound Entertainment for their collaboration.”

In January, HBO handed a straight-to-series order to The Chain, Wray’s latest collaboration with Damon Lindelof following The Leftovers and the Emmy-winning Watchmen. Her credits also include Westworld, Mad Men and Mindhunter. She is repped by Untitled, WME and Johnson Shapiro Sleweet & Kole.

In addition to The Walking Dead franchise on AMC, Skybound Entertainment is behind the hit Amazon adult-animation series Invincible, created by Kirkman. The company also has Swedish-language disaster thriller Vaka for Prime Video Nordics, which premiered earlier this year.

Berlanti is repped by CAA and Felker McGinnis & Ryan.
