Sam Smith is sharing insight into their non-binary label.

The 34-year-old singer revealed that they have always been non-binary, but didn’t have the “vocabulary for that” until more recently.

“I was one of the first queer people who was out from the beginning of my career,” Sam said during an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music that was released earlier this week.

Following the success of their In the Lonely Hour debut album, they said they were working to “figure out” who they were and what they were “meant to say.”

Sam shared how they felt they had to “appease the audience” while simultaneously dealing with the pressures of life changing when you become “famous at 21 years old.”

Sam came out as non-binary in 2019 and changed their pronouns to they/them, but they said they’ve felt that way since their debut album.

“I’ve always been non-binary. It’s always been who I am,” the “Unholy” singer shared. “I just found the vocabulary for that when I was, like, 27. So that was another coming out experience. And finally, here we are — and I’m fully out the closet.”
