EXCLUSIVE: Amazon MGM Studios is developing a sequel series to its psychological drama miniseries The Girlfriend, Deadline understands.

The Boyfriend will be an entirely standalone story, with new characters based around themes of masculinity, sources told us. Talks are continuing with writers, though no scribe is yet attached, we understand. Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment.

The Girlfriend launched in September 2025, and was a major hit for Prime Video, amassing more than 25 million views and becoming the top new series on the streamer in the UK.

The show was based on Michelle Frances’ novel of the same name and stars Olivia Cooke, Robin Wright and Laurie Davidson, the latter two of whom recently dropped by the Deadline Studio to talk all things Girlfriend. Imaginarium Productions and Amazon MGM Studios were the producers, with Naomi Sheldon and Gabbie Asher adapting the book for TV.

The six-part followed as Wright’s Laura, a well-to-do London art dealer, who loses her grip on reality when her precious son Daniel (Davidson) brings home new girlfriend Cherry (Cooke). No word on how that might influence The Boyfriend at this stage, but a source said the sequel would be a “bold psychological thriller.”

The news comes weeks after Amazon hired Apple exec Oliver Jones as Senior Commissioner for the UK. He is relocating from L.A. to London and will work closely with Nicole Clemens, VP of International Originals, on British originals.

That preceded the news that The Devil’s Hour and The Rig exec Jonathan Lewsley was exiting his post as Head of UK Scripted Originals.
