Filmmaker Denis Villenueve and artist Vija Celmins will be honored at this year’s LACMA Art+Film Gala.
“Whether in painting, drawing, printmaking, or other media, Vija Celmins’s exacting renderings of the natural world blend realism and imagination, resulting in sublimely beautiful works,” said LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg director Michael Govan said in a statement Wednesday. “Likewise, Denis Villenueve’s meticulously crafted worlds give his films an unforgettable visual impact, from contemplative and cerebral stories to global blockbusters. It will be a privilege for LACMA to honor both of these artists and their extraordinary careers in November.”
The 15th annual fundraiser, taking place Nov. 7 at LACMA, will be chaired by museum trustee Eva Chow and Leonardo DiCaprio. Gucci is the presenting sponsor, as it has been since 2011.
“I’m excited to bring together an amazing group of people once again to recognize the incredible work of Vija Celmins and Denis Villenueve, and to support LACMA’s art and film initiatives,” Chow said. “I’m deeply grateful that our longstanding partner Gucci has returned as our presenting sponsor. This event would not be possible without their continued generosity to the museum.”
The gala is a consistently starry event, bringing together celebrities across film, television, music, fashion and the art world. Proceeds from the gala go toward LACMA’s initiative to make film more central to the museum’s curation and programming, as well as LACMA’s broader mission. This includes exhibitions, acquisitions and educational programming exploring the intersection of art and film.
