There was big news for the Fanning clan on Wednesday morning, with Dakota Fanning nominated for her role in Peacock‘s limited series All Her Fault and Elle Fanning nominated for Apple TV+ comedy series Margot’s Got Money Troubles.
“I’m so always thrilled for anything good that happens to her,” Dakota told Deadline of her sister’s nomination, adding that Elle was unavailable to chat due to being seated right behind Queen Camila Parker-Bowles at Wimbledon. Dakota said she asked her sister, “‘Did you curtsy?’ She was like, ‘I tried. I did my best.'”
In All her Fault, Dakota stars as Jenny, friend to Sarah Snook’s character of Marissa, who is stunned when her son Milo suddenly disappears while on a supposed play date. Jake Lacy plays Marissa’s husband Pete, Abby Elliott is his sister Lia and Michael Peña is Detective Jim Alcaras. Fanning is nominated in Supporting Actress, with Snook in Lead Actress.
Fanning spoke to Deadline during a break in shooting her upcoming untitled Apple TV series (more on that later) and said she’d been trying to connect with the All her Fault team. “I’m working, so I’m back and forth to my little dressing room, but I’ve spoken to [EP and director] Minkie [Spiro] and I’ve texted Sarah and Abby too, who I became very good friends with. It’s just so wonderful for the series to be recognized.”
The Fanning sisters have teamed up for the first time to produce and star in the adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s bestselling book The Nightingale and Dakota reports that shooting has wrapped and they will shortly be diving into post-production.
Working with Elle was as wonderful as I expected. And any nerves that we had were gone within minutes of being on set together in our first scene.
“it really was such an adventure,” she said. “And working with Elle was as wonderful as I expected. And any nerves that we had were gone within minutes of being on set together in our first scene. It felt like we were like little girls playing in our playroom again as we did our whole childhood. And it’s just something we’ll share forever.”
Asked to recall a highlight from shooting the film, she said, “There’s a lot of heavy themes that are unavoidable with the subject matter and so there are a lot of days that were difficult, but then there’s some really beautiful sister moments that are very light. There’s one particular scene and one particular shot of my sister and I, and it sort of encapsulated the whole process. Chong-hoon Chong was the DP and he was filming. It was really beautiful. I will remember that moment forever.”
Things are also going great on the set of the new Apple TV thriller series from Alex Cary, she said. Fanning serves as EP and stars as an undercover treasury agent – a role that’s involved some challenges. “I’ve already been thrown into some scenarios that I had to learn how to do,” she said. “I won’t spoil it, but yeah, I’ve been thrown into some things that I’m like, ‘Oh s–t. OK yeah, got to look natural doing that.'”
Stellan Skarsgård, Grace Gummer, Darly McCormack and Joely Richardson also star in the series.
Fanning also has the new Joe Swanberg-directed film The Sun Never Sets, which premiered at the SXSW Film & TV Festival and will release nationwide September 4th. She executive produces and stars alongside Jake Johnson and Cory Michael Smith in the love triangle story.
She said of the film: “I think it is very personal and I think that I can relate to the character in a lot of ways. I think a lot of young people, young women, will see themselves in just the modern dating landscape of how complicated it is and how easy it is to become cynical and just lose your way. But I think that’s the beauty of it — that it’s a realistic approach and it’s actually quite hopeful and just real. The people that I know that have seen it so far, friends of mine at the screening in Austin, were almost having to hide their eyes at a certain point, because they were like, ‘It’s too real. We’ve been there.’ So I think people can identify with a lot of things and it’s also really funny and all of it wrapped into one film, all the emotions.”
This is the second Emmy nomination for both sisters, with Dakota previously nominated in 2024 for Ripley, and Elle for The Great in 2022.
