Liza Minnelli has added herself to the fans and friends paying tribute to the late Dolly Parton, posting an emotional message on Instagram saying this week’s news was “devastating.”
Beginning the message with her signature “Hey Kids,” Minnelli notes that she and the country music icon once shared an agent, Sam Haskell.
“Sam brought Dolly into our lives in powerful ways,” Minnelli writes of herself and friend Michael Feinstein. “Michael sang ‘Love Is Here To Stay’ with Dolly for his Gershwin Country album, which I Executive Produced. Of course, it was a hit.”
Writes the Cabaret Oscar winner, “The sound we hear isn’t thunder; it’s hearts cracking all over the world. No. It can’t be true. @dollyparton joined the celestial choir. This is devastating for so many reasons. I love Dolly. And she was always a truly supportive friend. We cheered each other on many times. When I was in trouble? Dolly knew it.”
“There’s much to say at this moment,” she continues. “I can’t get any words out. My throat … my heart … are full.”
Minnelli also notes what she will not be saying. “What I’m not going to share tonight? Spicy girl gossip during great meals, after visiting each others’ concerts.”
Parton died August 25 at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer, prompting an outpouring of tributes. Read some of them here and here and here.
