EXCLUSIVE: Mason Thames, the 19-year-old actor known for starring in the How to Train Your Dragon and Black Phone franchises, has inked a deal to lead Narcs, a new coming-of-age comedy from Sony Pictures.
Plot details for Narcs are being kept under wraps. John Phillips, whose writing credits include the R-rated comedies No Hard Feelings, Good Boys and Dirty Grandpa, is set to make his directorial debut here.
Script is by Jordan & Justin Shipley (creators of TBS comedy Wrecked) with a rewrite by Phillips & frequent collaborator Gene Stupnitsky, who’s producing through his Big Name Entertainment banner. Robert Lamonaca is exec producing via Big Name, alongside Phillips.
Thames cemented his status as a young star capable of commanding major studio vehicles with roles in a pair of Universal projects — the 2021 horror flick The Black Phone and 2025’s live-action How to Train Your Dragon. He’s subsequently gone on to reprise in sequels to both; The Black Phone 2 released in 2025, whereas he has How to Train Your Dragon 2 coming up for release on June 11, 2027. While previously appearing in Netflix’s Incoming, from Dave and John Chernin, he’s gotten further opportunities to demonstrate his comedic chops recently via Idiots, Macon Blair’s R-rated Sundance road trip flick acquired by Independent Film Company, as well as the Green Day project Nimrods. Upcoming, the actor will also be seen starring in the John Wick spin-off Caine helmed by Donnie Yen. He is repped by WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Goodman, Genow.
Phillips is repped by UTA, Underground and Schreck Rose. Justin & Jordan Shipley, who are currently developing the animated sci-fi series Mikey & the Last Mike with Hulu/20th and Amblin, are repped by WME, Haven Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson. Stupnitsky, who most recently directed Sony Pictures’s No Hard Feelings, starring Jennifer Lawrence, is repped by WME and Mosaic.
