Dolly Parton was an avid and dedicated animal lover throughout her life, but there were two specific dogs in her life with which she had a special connection.
In the 1980s, the “9 to 5” singer had a Boston terrier named Popeye who she credits with saving her life at one point. According to her recollection, Dolly was struggling with serious depression at one point and had even considered taking her own life.
She had gone upstairs and sought out a gun she kept on hand in case of a break-in.
Dolly Parton‘s team is making a special request of her fans.
“I looked at it a long time. Then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it, and look at it for a moment, our little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs,” she told Closer Weekly. “The tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality, I suddenly froze and I put the gun down.”
She said right after putting it down, she prayed and credited Popeye as being a “spiritual messenger from God.”
“I don’t think I’d have done it, killed myself, but I can’t say for sure. Now that I’ve gone through that terrible moment, I can certainly understand the possibilities, even for someone solid like me, if the pain gets bad enough,” Dolly shared.
The Nashville International Airport is considering changing its name in tribute to Dolly Parton.
She had a god-dog named Billy the Kid
Dolly had a “god-dog” named Billy the Kid. He’s a French bulldog owned by her longtime manager Danny Nozell. Billy has starred in several of Dolly‘s popular pictures books like Billy the Kid Makes It Big, Billy the Kid Comes Home for Christmas, and Billy the Kid Dances His Heart Out.
He even has a dedicated Instagram page that proudly proclaims him as the country legend’s god-dog.
Dolly passed away on Tuesday, August 25.
