Harry Shum, Jr. is explaining why he screamed during his Dancing with the Stars week 2 dance.
If you don’t recall, on the Tuesday evening episode of the show, he was performing a Viennese waltz to “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls with his pro partner Jenna Johnson when he let out an audible scream as part of the performance.
Why did Harry Shum Jr scream during DWTS?
“It was therapeutic. It just allowed this space where, usually dance, you do it quietly,” Harry told EW.
He noted that to “have that breath” and “let it out” was new for him in the world of dance.
Jenna Johnson added, “It was so awesome to see him be that vulnerable and to watch this piece come to life. I’m just so proud.”
As for their score, they received an 18 out of 30 from the three judges.
Jenna Johnson later explained why she coreographed the scream
“The scream that was heard around the world. The scream! The controversy!” she said on Instagram. “Let me tell you why. Obviously there were still 14 couples in the competition so our [introduction video] packages were so short. Harry and I had discussed this beautiful meaning behind the piece. Unfortunately, there was just no time to show everything that we discussed throughout the week.”
“We had talked about both of our anxiety, how that makes us feel, this constant doubt, this pressure that we have on ourselves, not feeling like you belong. We just dove into the emotion of it all, what does it feel like when you’re about to break?” she continued.
She asked him if they should go crazy during the dance, “He said, ‘Yeah, we should always go crazy,’ I just want to say, I’m so grateful for a partner who is down to do crazy things with me and that supports my ideas, my art and my creativity. [He] is willing to go there… the full visceral experience of his full-body scream was just, honestly, I think my favorite part.”
