The odds will forever be in Jennifer Lawrence’s favor.
With the Oscar winner set to briefly reprise her role as Katniss Everdeen in the prequel movie The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, director Francis Lawrence is grateful for her contribution to the series 14 years after the first Hunger Games film.
“This many movies in, we also have—which helps—the precedence of all the other amazing actors that have come before,” Francis shared during a Q&A alongside producer Nina Jacobson. “The Jen Lawrences and the Donald Sutherlands and the Philip Seymour Hoffmans and [Elizabeth] Banks.”
“So when actors come in and want to be involved, they see how many people have been involved before and the legacy of it all,” he added, “and I think are more than happy to join along.”
And that is certainly true for Sunrise on the Reaping—in theaters Nov. 20—as it brings together new faces like Joseph Zada as a young version of Woody Harrelson's Haymitch Abernathy, alongside seasoned veterans like Ralph Fiennes (President Snow), Kieran Culkin (Caesar Flickerman) and Glenn Close (Drusilla Sickle).
“There's always been an approach to go with new, young, up-and-coming people that the world mostly hasn't heard of to play some of the younger cast,” Francis explained, “and then to go for veteran actors. And we followed suit with that approach.”
And the director—who has helmed all the films in the franchise except for the first film—believes it’s not just the legacy of the Hunger Games movies but also “the themes that also draw the actors in.”
Both Jennifer and her Hunger Games costar Josh Hutcherson were clearly drawn in, as he also came aboard to play Peeta Mellark in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The pair will likely appear in a flash-forward scene toward the end of the film, as the characters do in the epilogue to the 2025 Suzanne Collins novel from which the film is adapted.
In the epilogue, Katniss and Peeta sit with Haymitch following their revolution in the Capitol—which occurred in Mockingjay—and learn about his tragic backstory.
The two are so moved by their former mentor's story, they give him a flock of geese to tend to after learning that his late love Lenora Dove Baird (Whitney Peak) cared for the animal.
“Like the geese,” Haymitch says, "we really did mate for life."
